Prop Research

Prop Research

Props For Our Film

  • Torch
  • Knife
  • Fake blood
  • Scarf

In our film we are using various range of props including, touch to search for the daughter in the dusk as this will make it scary as going into the woods in the dark , a knife for the antagonist to kill the daughter and make it more intense and dramatic, fake blood to make the killing look realistic, scarf for the mother and friend to find in the woods with blood on it. Having props in our film make our film look more realistic and having the extra props makes the film more effective and real towards the audience.

In horror films there use of props are similar with swords, knifes, Skelton skulls which shows a weary atmosphere, torches, scary statuses and blood. All these props make a horror film more effective and realistic and makes the atmosphere intense and dramatic and makes the audience wonder what's going to happen next. The audience expect these kind of props as it makes the location and setting and character more scary and if they hadn't of had these props in a horror film a horror film won't be scary and it will be dull and boring so having these props are a key influence in the films.

Camera Shot list

Camera Shots

Camera Shot List
  • Long Shot
  • Medium Shot
  • Establishing Shot
  • Close up Shot
  • High Shot
  • Low Shot
  • Panning
  • Over The Shoulder Shot

The key camera shots that we are going to use in our film is at the beginning we are going to do an establishing long shot of me walking through the woods this can show the whole location as we enter the opening scene. We will then have a few close up shots of my face as it will show the weary facial expressions that will be shown. you will see a long shot of the antagonist behind me. You will also see a range of medium shots this can show the body language between the characters that will be in the opening 2 minutes. There will be a low shot of me walking through the woods this will give the scene an effect as you will see me walking from a low point, this is the same with the high shot as we will see the antagonist go near me from a high point. Finally there will be panning in the opening 2 minutes starting from the feet and slowing going up until we reach to the face. It is good to have different camera shots in the opening scene as you will show the technique of how the camera shots are used and make it more effective and realistic towards the audience.

Sound Research

Sound Research
Non-Copyright Music
Non-copy right is where you can can listen and use a track with permission so you can get non-copyright tracks on you tube and online, most people tend to use non-copyright as it is easy to access on social media
The difference between copy right and non-copyright is that copy right is where someone own the track and they sue you if you use the songs and non copyright is where you are aloud to use the track.

Copyright Music
You can't find any copyright music or sound as it is illegal and you are not supposed to use a sound that is owned by another person so there isn't really any online. If there was to be a copyright music it will be similar to non-copyright music just scary and trilling so people can get weary.

Diegetic sound
Diegetic sound is where the sound is visible to the screen and the audience can see the sound being created. e.g breathing, birds, your voice ect

Non-Diegetic sound
Non-diegetic sound is where the sound is invisible and not shown on screen and the audience can't see the sounds that been created e.g, music soundtrack, voice overs.

Our Initial Sound Idea
In in our film we are going to have non-diegetic sound e.g music in your ears from the ear phones, intense coming up towards the intense dramatic moment. There will be diegetic sound in the of birds in the trees as we are filming in the woods so you will bound to hear birds, you will also hear heavy breathing as well which is diegetic sound also.

Costume Research

Costume Research

In a Horror film you would usually expected a character who is the victim to be dressed up in casual clothing and the antagonist would be dressed up in dark colors so that he can be unseen this makes the mood more suspicious as you don't know the antagonists identity, However in some films you can see what antagonists looks like and they normally dressed in suits or dark clothing, monsters and vampire obviously where a scary costume as they are scary people trying to be evil. Also in a horror film clowns and dolls turn out to be the most scariest because they both are creepy in a childlike way which makes the audience feel scared and worried around them.

Different Costumes featured in a Horror Film

  • Dark colours
  • Hoodie
  • Suit
  • Scary
  • Gruesome
  • Normal clothes
  • Clowns

Our Costume Initial Idea
For our costume we were think of dressing the girl who gets kidnapped up in just normal clothes as it has to be realistic as she is taking a normal stroll in the woods. The antagonist in our film will be in a dark hoodie and trousers this is so that they are unrecognizable to the protagonist so it get scarier as the antagonist gets closer. The mum and the caring friend will be dressed in normal everyday clothes maybe a little bit more vintage as they are mothers.

Film Mood Board

The Mood Board

In this mood board we have chosen the pictures because this is what we are going to include in our film. We have decided to use a knife in our film as it creates the tense atmosphere, also we are using Caitlin's dog Sheba as a prop as she is going to search for the missing daughter which then the touch is used to look for her when it gets to dusk. the woods are included in the mood board as we are going to film in the woods as it is a good location to films horror film as it is an open area and nobody is around and the atmosphere is tense and dramatic especially if someones following you.

Our Film- Initial Ideas

Initial Ideas
For our film we have decided to do horror, as it is quite a fun genre to film and you can include loads of different conventions to make the film look realistic such as blood, gruesome objects, vampires, zombies. Some of the locations that people normally use is either the woods, basement or someones house this makes it more scary as not many people will be in the location so it will be more scary.

Location
For our location we were thinking of filming in the woods because its quite a scary place to be as you are alone in the middle of nowhere so we were thinking of a character to be walking in the woods and someone sneaking up on them that they don't know. I think filming in the woods will be good as you have all the free space to film and you won't get distracted and it gets scary when it starts to gets dark so when we film it will be scary with all the wildlife noises and the rustling of the leaves.

Characters
  • Girl/Daughter who gets kidnapped
  • Antagonist
  • Worrying Parent
  • Caring Friend
In our film there is going to be a Girl who is walking home from collage and the way she has to go home is through the woods. She gets a phone call from her Mum and tells her that she is 10 minutes away. However lurking in the distance is a man who is in a black hoodie. who is the antagonist which kidnaps the girl and puts a knife up against her throat. A couple of hours later her mum keeps trying to ring her when she said she would be home in 10 minutes then she rings her friend about her worry's and her friend come over to help find her. they then enter the woods and finds her scarf and phone with blood on it.

Props

  • Knife
  • Fake Blood
  • Sheba
  • Touch
  • Phone
  • Scalf

Horror Titles

Old Horror titles

Horror titles were very basic in the 70's,80's,90's as they wouldn't have very much technology to airbrush them and make a great effect with them. So horror films were quite bold and clear with not much detail in those days but you could still see an overall idea of the story that the titles are going to be about. In those days horror films had just started to become big so making a film poster to advertise the film has to be eye catching. The horror titles that they do now has more effect and more detailed in the picture as it brings the idea of how scary the film will be and it more clear and bold and electric which makes it eye catching for the reader.
Schwarzenegger Predator is a great horror set in 1987  and the titles is bold and a picture of the main character Arnold Schwarzenegger which the audience will want to see as he is a famous actor.

In this title Jaws (1974) you can see that it is plain and with little detail with just a shark in the water. This may come across not eye catching as it just plain and not as effective. Also the writing at the bottom is quite small so the audience wouldn't be able to see what it really says This may be improved by the shark being more close up with blood coming out of its mouth as it will look scary. However you can tell the theme of the film with the shark and the titles which the audience  can have an idea of what the films going to be about.
With this title The Shining (1980) It is the same as Jaws quite clear, bold with no effect to it and just a to it is quite plain as well with just a picture of a face and the name of the actor who stars in the film and the films name which is bold with no effective font. This can be improved by making the face more effective and the font being more creative and effective.

In this title Psycho (1960) it is very vintage and modern this is because it was set in the 60's it shows a lot about the film the character, but it doesn't show that what the film is really about only by the title which does have some feature in it with a rip through the word Psycho. To improve you might want to include the antagonist to show that there is a villein in the film and it is scary.

Recent Horror Titles
These titles are all from recent years and they are bold effective and all realistic they show detail in all of the titles and has a theme to them which gives the audience an idea of what the film will be about. The titles also engages the audience by the scary, creepy detail.

In this title The Conjuring (2013) you can see that it is very mysterious with a piece of rope hanging from a tree in a misty garden. This looks very mysterious and creepy as you wouldn't know what to expect. It hasn't got barely any credits and the font is creepy eye catching and you can see that the audience will want to watch it to see whats going to happen as it is engaging the audience to watch the film and shows that it is a typical horror film.

In this title The Women in Black 2 (2014) you can tell that it is a real horror as there are old creepy hands covering a child's face. It is bold, effective, realistic and detailed. It engages the audience as it has a bold clear creepy title to get the audience to watch it and at the bottom of the poster you can see a quote saying 'she never left' in messy writing this shows that the women had never left following the first film and that it can get more interesting so the audience can watch the second one.

In this title 'The Purge' it is scary, creepy and effective as it shows you a picture of a scary man pulling a creepy and insure face. This is also detailed with the facial expressions and the way he is looking can make the audience feel wary and want to watch the film. With the background being dark you can tell that the film is going to be scary especially with the face.

In this title 'Horns' it is very modern as it has a picture of the main characters Daniel Radcliffe this will encourage the audience to watch the film as we normally see Daniel playing harry potter so it will be nice to see him in a genre which is different. The font is bloody with blood dripping from the letters which gives a scary and gruesome effect on the title. The background is set in the woods which is a scary place to be especially when its dark so this gives the audience an idea that it may be scary as it is set in the woods.

Pictures of the Location

Pictures of the Location

This video shows the camera panning the location from a standing point of view, this is effective as it shows the audience the location with camera movement and to show you where we are going to film our opening 2 minutes. We have also included pictures of different part of the woods as well, as the woods are going to be the main location as our plot is going to be set in the woods, we have chosen the woods as it is quite a scary place when it turns to dusk as it makes everyone is wary especially if you are on your own and as we are doing a horror it links in with the whole scary location. Having these pictures shows the audience where and what the location looks like ahead of our opening 2 minutes.

Target Audience Research

Target audience
For our film our target audience research will be a 15+ film this is because we are doing horror and we want to include things that only 15 are suitable to watch. As it is a horror we are included conventions such as knife, blood an antagonist and in the woods, so the audience will have to understand that it will include some things that under fifteens can't watch.

For many horrors the target audience is normally an 18 with blood gore, evil antagonist, scary and dramatic non-diegtic sound and scary monsters and not suitable for people under 18.

In this pie graph it shows the different age groups that mainly watch a horror film. As we can see people over 50+ are least likely to watch a horror film as they are at 10%, this is because older generation are not interested really in that sort of genre. The highest age group is 19-24 year old they are the most likely age group to watch a horror film and to enjoy it as it is is more thrilling for that sort of age group with 37% of people liking horror films and in the middle 15- 18 years old, 25-34 years old and 35-49 years old are likely to watch horror films and still being suitable to watch them.

Certificate Research

Certificate Research
Films normally have a certificate rating showing what age is suitable for the film, this shows us our target audience by seeing on the film the certificate rate.

U
U stands for universal this means a U film is suitable for an audience that is four and over. However, it is impossible to predict what might upset a particular child, especially at this lower end of the category range. A U film can explore a wide range of themes as long as the treatment is appropriate
for a young audience. This doesn't mean that all films rated U are children's films.

PG
PG stands for Parental Guidance, this means a film is suitable for general viewing, but some scenes may be unsuitable for young children. A PG film should not unsettle a child aged around eight or older. Parents should consider whether the content may upset younger, or more sensitive children. PG certificate means that any issues in the work are appropriate for the majority of this age group and nothing should upset a child eight or over.

12A
12A means 12 Accompanied/ Advisory this is suitable for those aged 12 and older (cinema only) they are also suitable for those under 12, but only if they are accompanied by an adult. 12A requires an adult to accompany any child under 12 seeing a 12A film at the cinema. This is enforced by cinema staff and a cinema may lose its lisense if an adult is not accompaniment is not enforced for children under 12 admitted to a 12A film. Accompanied viewing cannot be enforced in the home, so the 12 certificate remains for DVD/Blue-ray, rather than the 12A.

12
A 12 is suitable for people who are aged 12 and older. It is slightly similar to 12A rating but you have to be 12 years or over. The themes that may be suitable for is themes that are mature and but have to be suitable for young teenagers. The use of strong language is quite rare considering it is for young teenagers. Sexual context is allowed bu has to be very brief and discreet.

15
Suitable for people who are 15 and older. No themes are prohibited, provided the treatment is suitable for 15 year old. 15 films may include the following, Strong violence, Frequent language, Sexual Activity, Nudity this is all suitable for people 15 and older.

18
An 18 is suitable for anyone older than 18 as it may contain, strong violence, sexual activity, strong language, blood and gore and strong horror which isn't suitable for people under 18. Also now you have to have someone sort of ID to prove that you are 18 other wise you won't be able to watch this film.
